sports Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Harness racing is a special kind of horse race.

Instead of riding the horse, a driver sits in a small cart. This cart has two wheels and is called a sulky.

The horses do not gallop like other race horses. They must move in a specific way called a gait. One way is trotting. A trotter moves its legs in diagonal pairs. Another way is pacing. A pacer moves its legs side to side.

In North America, most races use pacers. Pacers are often faster. They are also less likely to break their stride. If a horse breaks its stride, it starts to gallop. The driver must then slow the horse down. Many races start behind a moving gate. This gate is a motor vehicle with wings. The wings fold up to let the horses start.

Some races use a standing start. In these races, horses stand still or trot in circles. This helps set the order for the race. It is a sport of great skill and speed.
