It uses special birds called Racing Homers. These birds are bred to fly long distances. They have a strong drive to find their home.

Trainers take the birds far away. Then they release them to fly home. People measure the time it takes to fly back. The bird with the highest speed wins the race.

Training starts when the birds are young. They first fly in small circles near their home. Later, they go on "training tosses." This means they are flown a long way and released. Some trainers use a way called widowhood. They use the birds' desire to be with mates to help them fly fast.

Racing can be hard. Birds must face bad weather. They must also watch for predators like the peregrine falcon.

To track the birds, people use special tools. Old ways used rubber rings and clocks. New ways use RFID tags. These are tiny chips that scan the bird as it arrives.
