Mules are very strong and tough. They often live longer than horses. They also need less food and water. This makes them great for dry places.

Mules have many useful traits. They get intelligence from donkeys. They get speed from horses. They can carry heavy loads on their backs. In the 1880s, a team of twenty mules pulled wagons in California.

Most mules cannot have babies. This is because of their chromosomes. Chromosomes are tiny parts in cells that carry traits. A horse has 64 chromosomes. A donkey has 62. A mule has 63. This odd number makes it hard for them to make new life. Still, a few female mules have had babies in the past. Some mules even live in places like Nepal to help deliver food to children.
