These dogs are very popular pets today. They are often kept for friendship. In 2024, they were the most popular breed in America. This was a big change from 2003. Back then, they were only in 54th place. They have become a favorite in many countries. This includes the United Kingdom and Australia.

These dogs have a very specific look. They have a flat face. This is called brachycephaly. This means their snout is very short.

Their heads are large and square. They have ears that look like bat ears. These ears stand up straight. Their coats are short and silky. Most are brindle or fawn colored. Some are white with brindle patches. This pattern is called pied. Their weight is usually under 28 pounds.

These dogs have an interesting history. They appeared in Paris in the mid-nineteenth century. They came from cross-breeding small dogs from England. They also mixed with local Parisian ratters. Lace workers from Nottingham moved to France. They brought Toy Bulldogs with them. These small dogs became popular in France. By 1860, there were few Toy Bulldogs left in England. The name comes from the words for ball and mastiff. Artists like Edgar Degas even painted them.

Many people helped shape the breed. In 1885, people brought them to America. They were shown at a big dog show in 1896. A judge named George Raper liked rose ears. But the ladies who owned them wanted bat ears. They formed the French Bull Dog Club of America. In England, the breed was recognized in 1905. This was after a meeting in 1902. This meeting happened at the house of Frederick W. Cousens. They wanted the breed to be its own kind.

Because of their flat faces, they face health challenges. Their short snouts can make breathing hard. This is called brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome. It can make them struggle to get air. They also have trouble staying cool. They cannot lower their body heat well by panting. They can also have skin problems in their wrinkles. Many French Bulldogs need help during birth. Over 80% of litters are delivered by a special surgery.
