This breed was first seen in Massachusetts. It was the most common chicken in the United States for a long time. People call it a dual-purpose bird. This means it is raised for meat and for eggs. These chickens lay large brown eggs. One bird lays about 200 eggs every year.

These birds are easy to manage. They can handle the cold well. They are also good sitters. They have a single comb on their heads. A comb is the fleshy red part on top. Their legs are yellow and have no feathers. In the United States, there are seven color types. The most famous has stripes. We call this barred plumage. Other types include blue, buff, and white.

Long ago, people mixed different birds to make this breed. One man named D.A. Upham mixed Black Java hens with a striped cock. He wanted birds with stripes and clean legs. Today, the breed is listed as recovering. This means more people are starting to raise them again.
