American Brahman

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The American Brahman is a special kind of beef cattle. These cows were made in the United States. People started breeding them in 1885. They used cows from India and Brazil to make them. These original cows included breeds like the Gir and Nelore.

Brahman cows are very strong. They can handle high heat and sun. They also do well in humid air. These cows have good resistance to parasites. Parasites are small pests that live on animals. They can also live with poor food.

Farmers use these cows for meat. Some meat is better if you mix them with European cows. This creates new breeds. One example is the Brangus. It is a mix of Brahman and Angus cattle.

These cows live in fifty-five countries. They are found on every inhabited continent. In Australia, they are the most common breed. By 1987, over one million lived in Queensland alone. There are more than 1.8 million Brahman cows in the world.
