They live in areas like Limousin and La Marche. Long ago, these cattle were strong workers. They were used as draught animals to pull heavy things.

Today, they are mostly raised for beef. They are a world breed. People raise them in about eighty different countries.

In the past, these cattle were not very large. They weighed about 300 to 350 kg. This changed when farmers used better food. They used clover and ryegrass to help them grow.

New fertilizers also helped the grass grow well.

Farmers use a herd-book to track the animals. A herd-book is a record of an animal's family. This helps people know if a cow is a true Limousin. In France, some are called Full French. This means they follow strict rules. They must be inspected to meet a breed standard. This standard is a list of traits for the breed. In the 1960s, the breed almost disappeared. People wanted to merge them with other breeds. But the breeders fought to keep them separate. Now, they are very successful.
