life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Charolais cattle come from a part of France.

This area is near a town called Charolles. These cows are very big. Bulls can weigh up to 1,150 kilograms. Cows weigh up to 650 kilograms.

Their coats are white or cream. They also have pink noses.

People raise these cows for meat. They are a very common breed in France. In fact, they are the most common beef breed there.

You can find them in many places. Sixty-eight countries report them. The largest groups live in Mexico and the Czech Republic.

Farmers sometimes mix these cows with other breeds. This makes new kinds of cattle. For example, the Charbray is a mix with Brahman cattle. The Canchim is a breed from Brazil. It uses Charolais to make the new breed. People also make Charford and Char-Swiss in the United States. These cows were brought to the southern United States from Mexico in 1934.
