It is the state bird of Rhode Island. People made this breed in the late 1800s. They did this in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

To make them, people mixed different birds. They used birds from the East. These birds included the Malay and the Cochin. They also used the Java and the Shanghai. Then, they mixed them with brown Leghorn birds from Italy. The Malay bird gave them their deep red plumage. Plumage is the word for a bird's feathers.

These chickens have many colors. Their feathers can be deep red or almost black. Their tails are mostly black. They have yellow legs and feet. Their red comb can be a single-comb or a rose-comb. A comb is the fleshy part on top of a bird's head.

People use these birds for two things. They provide meat and eggs. This makes them a dual-purpose breed. Today, many are bred to lay many eggs. These chickens lay brown eggs.
