Some birds are now bred just for laying eggs. These modern birds are called industrial strains. The traditional old-type birds are very special. They lay brown eggs and have tasty meat.

Making this breed was a careful job. People used selective breeding to create them. They mixed birds from different parts of the world. They used birds from the East, like the Malay. Other birds used were the Cochin, Java, and Shanghai.

Then, they mixed them with brown Leghorn birds from Italy. The Malay bird gave them their deep red feathers. This color is called plumage. The process happened in the late nineteenth century.

Many people helped name and show these birds. In 1891, Nathaniel Borden Aldrich showed them in Philadelphia. He called them "Golden Buffs" at that time. They first used the name Rhode Island Red in 1895. A man named Isaac Champlin Wilbour might have named them too. Another name came from Mr. Jenny in 1879. In 1901, a club in Boston approved their rules. The single-comb variety was added to a list in 1904.

These chickens have very bright colors. Their plumage can be deep red or almost black. Most of their tails are black. They have red combs on their heads. A comb is the fleshy part on top. A comb can be a single-comb or a rose-comb.

Their eyes are a reddish bay color. Their beaks look like reddish horn. Their legs and feet are yellow. Sometimes the toes have a little red on them.

This breed is a big part of history. Rhode Island celebrated the breed in 1954. They built a monument in Little Compton, Rhode Island. This was to mark one hundred years of the breed. The monument is at the William Tripp farm.

These birds are also very important for new breeds. Many modern hybrid birds use them to grow. The old-type birds are even on a special list called the Ark of Taste. This helps people remember them.
