It is known for being very sweet to the taste. Most of these apples have a bright, uniform yellow skin. Sometimes, you might see a little red blush on the fruit.

You may also notice tiny speckles on the skin. These speckles are a normal part of the apple. Some apples might also have rough skin near the stem. People love eating them plain or in salads and apple sauce.

They are also great for baking delicious apple pies. This is because they have a lot of pectin. Pectin helps the apple stay firm when it is cooked.

Growing these apples requires a lot of care.

They can bruise easily if they are handled roughly. They can also shrivel if they are not stored well. Farmers usually harvest them 130 to 150 days after the flowers bloom.

This process ensures the fruit is ready to eat. Scientists even studied the tiny parts that make up the apple. In 2010, a group from Italy decoded its entire genome. They found it has 57,000 genes. This is the highest number of genes found in any plant genome studied so far.

This special apple began with a lucky accident.

It grew from a chance seedling on a family farm. This farm belonged to J. M. Mullins in Clay County, West Virginia. At first, people called it the Mullins' Yellow Seedling. Later, Mullins sold the tree and the rights to it. He sold them to Stark Brothers Nurseries for $5,000. In 1914, the nursery began selling it as a partner to the Red Delicious apple. This started its journey to becoming a favorite around the world.

Many important records celebrate this fruit.

On February 20, 1995, West Virginia named it the official state fruit. Clay County has held a Golden Delicious Festival every year since 1972. In 2013, the United States Postal Service put the apple on a 33¢ stamp. It was honored alongside other historic apples like the Granny Smith. Even today, it remains a top choice in many places. It is one of the most popular apples in the European Union.

This apple is also a very important parent.

Many other apples you know come from its family tree. For example, the Jonagold apple was made in 1943. Scientists in New York cross-bred Golden Delicious with Jonathan trees to make it. The Gala and Honeycrisp apples are also descendants of this variety. These apples are among the top nine most popular in the United States. It is amazing how one lucky seedling can create so many tasty fruits.
