This fruit has skin that is red and green. The skin is thick and very easy to peel. Inside, the white flesh is juicy and firm. It can sometimes have pink or green tints. People love it because it has a tart flavor. You can eat it raw as a snack. It is also great for making apple sauce or pies.

Because it cooks quickly, it is a helpful apple for dessert.

Growing these apples takes specific conditions. The trees grow best in cool areas. They like cold nights and clear autumn days. If the weather is not right, the fruit might be soft. It might even fall from the tree too early. The fruit is easy to bruise, so it must be handled carefully. It can stay fresh in the air for two or three months. For longer storage, farmers use a special controlled atmosphere. This uses specific levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Under these rules, the apples can stay good for eight months.

A man named John McIntosh found the first tree in 1811. He found it while clearing land on his farm in Dundela. This place was in Upper Canada. His grandchildren called it "Granny's apple." They saw their grandmother caring for the tree. Later, his son Allan learned a skill called grafting. Grafting is a way to make new trees from an old one. This helped the family keep the fruit's special qualities. They started selling the fruit in 1835. By 1870, it was being grown for many people to buy.

This apple is very important for science and history.

It is used a lot to create new apple types. In 1996, a study showed it was a parent to many new varieties. It helped make apples like the Cortland and the Empire. In the United States, it was a top apple for a long time. In the 1960s, it made up 40% of the Canadian market. Today, it is still one of the nine most popular apples in America. Even in New York, it remains a very important crop.

You might see the name of this apple in other places. For example, the Macintosh computer line was named after it.

People often call the apple a "Mac" for short. Some people now prefer newer apples like the Gala or Honeycrisp. These new types are often sweeter and less tart. However, the McIntosh is still very common in Quebec and Ontario.
