Computers need special software to tell them what to do. Apple created a famous series of this software called Classic Mac OS.

It began in 1984 with a program called System 1. This software was important because it changed how people used computers. Before this, many people had to type text commands to make things happen. The Macintosh made using a computer feel much more natural.

It helped make the idea of a graphical user interface very popular.

This system worked using a few key parts. It used a Macintosh Toolbox ROM to hold important code. It also used a "System Folder" to hold files on a disk. Instead of typing, users could use mouse gestures to control things. They could use drag and drop to move items around.

The system even used a special way to store files. Each file had two parts called forks. One part held the main data, like text. The other part, the resource fork, held things like sounds or menus.

The history of this software began a long time ago. A man named Jef Raskin started the Macintosh project in late 1978. He wanted a low-cost computer for everyone to use. Later, Steve Jobs took over the project in January 1981. Apple engineers also looked at ideas from a computer called the Xerox Alto. This helped them create the menu bar and pull-down menus. Susan Kare designed the famous icons used to represent folders and apps.

These icons are so important they are shown in museums today.

There are many interesting facts about the different versions. The first Macintosh was released on January 24, 1984. Early versions could only run one application at a time. Later, a tool called MultiFinder let users see many windows at once. Apple changed the name to Mac OS in 1996 with version 7.6. The last major release was Mac OS 9 in 1999.

Even the error messages were visual, using icons or special sounds like the Chime of Death.

Classic Mac OS connects to the computers we use today. In 2001, Apple replaced it with a new system called Mac OS X. While the inside of the new system was very different, it looked similar. It kept many of the same design ideas from the old version. This made it easier for people to switch to the new computers.

Today, we call the modern version macOS, but it still carries the spirit of those first Macintosh machines.
