It was mostly used for computers made in the 1980s. This system helped Microsoft grow from a small company into a huge software firm. It provided the money and resources they needed to build many other things. Even early versions of Windows used MS-DOS to help the computer work.

Using MS-DOS is a specific way of working with a computer. Instead of clicking pictures, you type text called a command.

A part of the system called COMMAND.COM reads your words. It looks for a match in its own files or on the disk. Once it finds a match, it starts the task you asked for. If a program finishes, the interpreter comes back into the computer's memory. This allows the user to type new commands right away.

MS-DOS has a very interesting history. It started as a program called 86-DOS. A man named Tim Paterson wrote it in only six weeks.

Microsoft bought this software in July 1981. They renamed it MS-DOS and began selling it to others. In August 1981, IBM released a version called PC DOS 1.0. This was for use with the IBM Personal Computer. Microsoft soon licensed the system to over 70 other companies.

There are many facts about how MS-DOS changed over time. Early users kept the system on floppy disks to store data.

As computers changed, MS-DOS added support for larger storage tools. It went through eight different versions before work stopped in 2000. The final standalone version was 6.22, which came out in 1994.

Some companies even made their own versions, like Compaq-DOS. These versions helped different types of computers run the same software.

Today, we use computers in a very different way. Most people use a graphical user interface, or GUI. This means we use icons and mice instead of typing text. MS-DOS was replaced by these newer, visual systems. However, you can still see its influence in modern technology. Some large companies still use it to run old programs.
