MS-DOS, which stands for Microsoft Disk Operating System, is a foundational operating system for x86-based personal computers. An operating system is the essential software that manages a computer's hardware and allows applications to run. During the 1980s, MS-DOS served as the primary operating system for IBM PC compatibles. It played a massive role in the history of technology. It transformed Microsoft from a small programming language company into a global software giant. This success provided the revenue and resources necessary for Microsoft to develop many other products. 
To understand how MS-DOS works, one must look at its command interpreter, known as COMMAND.COM. This program runs whenever no other application is active. Users interact with the computer by typing text commands rather than clicking icons. When a user enters a command, the interpreter searches for a match. It looks for a built-in command or an executable file on the current drive or along the command path. While the system is case-insensitive for commands and filenames, it preserves the case of parameters. If an application finishes its task, the interpreter is reloaded into the computer's memory. This ensures the user can immediately begin a new task. 
MS-DOS was designed with a modular structure to handle different types of computer hardware. This design included a kernel, which is the core of the operating system, and a DOS BIOS. The BIOS contains internal device drivers for primary functions like the console and disk drives. It was loaded by a boot loader during the startup process. Other, more specific device drivers could be installed and integrated at boot time. This allowed different manufacturers, known as Original Equipment Manufacturers or OEMs, to build custom versions. They used Microsoft development kits to combine the standard kernel with their own input/output drivers. 
The history of MS-DOS began with a program called 86-DOS. A developer named Tim Paterson wrote 86-DOS in only six weeks. It was a clone of an older system called CP/M, but it featured improved disk sector buffering logic and the FAT12 filesystem. Microsoft hired Paterson in May 1981 and purchased 86-DOS 1.10 in July. They renamed the software MS-DOS and licensed it to IBM. In August 1981, IBM released PC DOS 1.0 for the IBM 5150 Personal Computer. Within one year, Microsoft had licensed MS-DOS to more than 70 different companies. 
As the market grew, different versions of the software emerged. While MS-DOS and PC DOS were developed in parallel, they eventually diverged. By 1993, they had recognizable differences in syntax, capabilities, and compatibility. Other companies also released competing products, such as DR-DOS. Some manufacturers, like Compaq, developed their own software called COMPAQ-DOS. Eventually, Microsoft discontinued its own internal development of MS-DOS. Instead, they licensed COMPAQ-DOS from Compaq and resold it as MS-DOS. This allowed Microsoft to maintain high compatibility with IBM hardware. 
MS-DOS evolved through eight distinct versions before development ceased in the year 2000. Early versions were designed for Intel 8086 processors and relied on floppy disks for storage. As technology advanced, newer versions added support for larger mass storage media and different computer architectures. For example, version 2.x became very popular because it was reliable and used less memory than version 3. It also introduced support for IBM's XT 10 MB hard disk drives and a tree-structure filing system. The final standalone version was 6.22, released in 1994. Later versions, such as 7 and 8, functioned mostly in the background to load the Windows 9x operating system. 
The legacy of MS-DOS is visible in how modern computing evolved. It was the underlying system that allowed early versions of Microsoft Windows to run as a graphical user interface (GUI). While most modern users now rely on GUIs with icons and mice, the command-line concept remains. You can still see a version of this interaction today through the Command Prompt in Windows 10.
