You can buy it once or pay for it through a subscription. This makes it a very important tool for school and work.

This program works by using special ways to save your writing.

Older versions of Word used a file type ending in .doc. Newer versions use a type called .docx. This newer way uses something called XML, which is a standard for organizing digital information. When you save a document, the computer uses a complex system to store your text. It uses things called storages, which act like digital folders. Inside these folders, it keeps streams, which are like small files. This helps the computer find exactly where your text starts and ends.

Microsoft began building this tool many years ago.

In 1981, Microsoft hired a man named Charles Simonyi. He had worked on an early version of a word processor at a place called Xerox PARC. He was joined by Richard Brodie, who became a main engineer for the software. They first released the program on October 25, 1983. At that time, it had a different name: Multi-Tool Word. It was first made for systems called Xenix and MS-DOS. Soon, the name was changed to the simpler Microsoft Word.

Word has lived on many different kinds of machines over the years.

One special feature was called WYSIWYG. This stands for "What You See Is What You Get." It means the screen shows you exactly how the page will look when printed. Early versions also let you use a mouse to click things. This was very different from other programs at the time. Later, Microsoft added AutoCorrect to fix typing mistakes automatically. They also added AutoFormat to change the look of a whole page at once. These tools make writing much easier for everyone.
