Microsoft Office is a huge set of computer tools.

These tools help people do many different jobs on a computer. People use them to write, calculate, and show ideas to others. It is a very important part of how many people work every day. The suite includes many different programs for different needs. Some are for writing, while others are for managing information. This collection of software makes hard tasks much easier to finish.

Each program in the suite works in its own special way.

Microsoft Word is a word processor used to write text. Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet program for working with numbers. Microsoft PowerPoint lets you make slideshows with text and pictures. OneNote is a tool for taking notes with typing or drawing. Outlook helps you manage your email and your calendar. On Windows, you can also use Access to manage databases.

Bill Gates first announced the Office suite on August 1, 1988. At that time, it only had Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Word actually started even earlier in the autumn of 1983. The first version of Word worked on the MS-DOS system. It even helped more people learn how to use a computer mouse. By 1985, Microsoft released the first graphical version of Word for the Mac.

There are many different ways to get these programs today.

Microsoft now promotes Microsoft 365 as the main way to use Office. This uses a subscription model where you pay a fee to use it. This model lets you get new updates and features all the time. In 2017, the money from these subscriptions became larger than old sales. You can also buy a version that you own forever. The newest version of the permanent software is called Office 2024.

These tools are part of our digital world.

You can use them on a big desktop computer or a small phone. Mobile apps let you scan documents or sign papers on the go. You can even use a phone as a remote control for your computer. Some versions of Office even work right inside your web browser. This means you can access your files from almost anywhere. It connects your work to the internet using services like OneDrive.
