People do this by making products or by buying and selling goods and services. A service is a task done for others, like a hair stylist or a dry cleaner. Most people in the world work in the private sector. This means they work for a business rather than for the government. The main goal of these businesses is to make a profit. They do this by creating value that is higher than the cost to make it.

There are many different ways to own a business. A sole proprietorship is owned by just one person. This owner works alone but can still hire employees. A partnership is owned by two or more people. In most partnerships, the owners have unlimited liability. This means they are responsible for all the debts the business makes. Some people choose a limited liability company instead. This structure helps protect owners if the business fails.

Corporations are much larger and more complex than small shops. A corporation is a separate legal entity. This means the law sees the business as its own unique person. Because of this, the owners have limited liability. This protects their own money if the business has debts. Corporations can be privately owned by a small group. They can also be publicly held. This means they sell shares on a stock exchange.

People use different tools to manage their money. Accounting is often called the "language of business." It is the way people measure and share financial information. An Italian mathematician named Luca Pacioli helped establish this field in 1494. Accountants use these numbers to help owners and investors understand the business. Commerce is the bigger process of exchanging goods and services. It includes many steps like marketing, banking, and shipping.

Businesses can do almost any kind of work. Some focus on agriculture by growing food or raising animals. Others work in mining to find natural resources like metals. Some provide transportation by using planes or trains. You might even see a franchise in your town. A franchise is when someone buys the right to run a business from a larger corporation. In the United States, one out of twelve retail businesses is a franchise. This helps millions of people find jobs.
