This money helps pay for things that everyone uses. Governments use these funds for roads, public schools, and health systems. They also pay for public safety, like police and legal systems. Some taxes help pay for scientific research or the arts. Taxes allow a government to function and grow in an orderly way.

There are many different ways that taxes work. Some taxes are direct, which means they go straight from a person to the government. Others are indirect, like a tax on things you buy. Most people pay taxes using money. In the past, some people paid with labor instead of cash. This is called corvée taxation. Today, many countries use a progressive system for income. This means people pay a different percentage based on how much they earn.

In the United Kingdom, the agency is called HMRC. The Canada Revenue Agency and the Australian Taxation Office do similar work.

Governments collect many specific types of taxes. They may charge an income tax on what a person earns each year. They also collect corporate tax from businesses. Some taxes are placed on property, like a house or land. There are also taxes on gifts or things people inherit. Some countries have social security contributions to pay for retirement or healthcare. Other taxes might be on things like the environment or payroll.

People often have big debates about how taxes should work. Most people believe taxes are necessary for a healthy society. They help provide public goods and services to everyone. However, some people, like libertarians, disagree with taxation. They may see it as unfair or forced. Some small countries act as tax havens by having very low taxes. These places attract money from larger economies. This can cause other countries to lose tax money they would have otherwise collected.
