Nonprofit organization

society Maturity 9-11 Next article →

A nonprofit organization is a group that works for a social or public benefit. Unlike a regular business, these groups do not work to make money for private owners.

Instead, they focus on a special mission. If they have money left over after paying their costs, they must use it for their purpose. This rule is called a non-distribution constraint. These organizations can be many things, such as schools, hospitals, or churches. They can also be foundations, social clubs, or political groups.

To do their work, nonprofits must find ways to bring in enough money. They do not seek profit, but they must be financially stable. They raise funds through many different paths. Some get donations from individuals or foundations. Others receive money from government grants or corporate sponsorships.

Some groups even sell merchandise or provide services to earn income. Because government grants can change, many groups now try to get money from many different sources. This helps them stay strong if one source of money goes away.

Managing a nonprofit is a big job that requires being professional. Most have paid staff who lead the work. They also rely on volunteers to help provide services.

Leaders must balance staff salaries with the money spent on their actual programs. If a group spends too much on salaries, they might face legal scrutiny. They must also build trust with the people who give them money. When the public has confidence in a group, that group can often raise more money.

In the United States, there are many different ways these groups are set up. Some are membership organizations where members elect the leaders. Others are board-only organizations, like the Wikimedia Foundation. In the U.S., there are more than 1.5 million registered nonprofits.

These include public charities and private foundations. Some groups have special tax statuses. For example, a 501(c)(3) is a religious or educational group. Other groups, like 501(c)(7) organizations, focus on recreation or pleasure.

Nonprofits play a huge role in our communities every day. They provide things like medical research, health services, and education.

In the United States, charitable giving reached about $557.08 billion in 2024. People also give their time to help. A 2025 report found that 56.7 million adults formally volunteered. This volunteer work adds about $145 billion in value to communities. Whether they are helping with housing or technology, these groups work to make the world better.
