AutoCAD is a special type of computer software used for design.

It is known as CAD, which stands for computer-aided design. This tool helps people create very precise technical drawings. These drawings can be 2D, which are flat like a piece of paper. They can also be 3D models that look like real objects.

Professionals use it for many different jobs. Architects use it to plan buildings. Engineers use it to design parts. Interior designers and city planners also use it to prepare their work.

This software works by letting users draw shapes like lines and circles. Some versions are even smarter than others. For example, AutoCAD Architecture lets designers draw 3D objects like walls and doors. These are not just simple shapes. They hold extra information, like the type of product used in a building. This data can help people estimate how much a project will cost. It can also help them figure out which materials they need to buy. The software can even turn a 3D model into 2D drawings like sections or elevations.

Before AutoCAD, using design programs was a much harder job. Most programs ran on huge mainframe computers. Each person had to work at their own separate graphics terminal. AutoCAD changed this by working on smaller microcomputers. The program grew from an earlier project called Interact CAD. That program started in 1977 and was released in 1979. Autodesk released the first version of AutoCAD in December 1982. By March 1986, it had become the most common CAD program in the world.

AutoCAD has many different versions and ways to use it. There is a version called AutoCAD LT. This is a lower-cost version that was first released in November 1993. It is good for basic tasks, but it cannot make 3D models or print in 3D. There are also mobile apps for phones and tablets. The iOS version came out in September 2010. The Android version followed on April 20, 2011. Users can also use the Web App through a browser like Google Chrome. Some people even use a pay-as-you-go option called Autodesk Flex.

Learning how to use these tools is important for many students. AutoCAD is given to students and teachers for free. They can get a license that lasts for 12 months and can be renewed. This version works just like the full version. However, there is one small difference in how the files work. Files made by students have a special "educational flag" inside them. If these files are printed on certain versions of the software, a stamp appears on the edges of the paper. This helps people know the file was made for learning.
