OpenGL is a special tool used to draw 2D and 3D graphics on a computer screen. It is called an API, which stands for application programming interface. You can think of an API as a set of rules that lets different programs talk to each other. OpenGL specifically helps software talk to a graphics processing unit, or GPU. The GPU is a piece of hardware that is very good at making pictures quickly.

Because it is so fast, OpenGL is used for many exciting things. It helps create video games, flight simulations, and virtual reality worlds. It is also used for scientific visualization and computer-aided design.

This tool works through a step-by-step way of moving data. It uses a set of functions and named constants to tell the hardware what to do. For example, it might use a code like GL_TEXTURE_2D to describe a surface. Most of the time, the GPU does the heavy lifting to make the rendering fast. However, it is also possible for a computer to do this work using only its main processor, called a CPU.

This process allows computers to show complex shapes and colors on a screen. The API focuses only on drawing the graphics. It does not handle things like sound, mouse clicks, or windows.

Before OpenGL, making graphics software was a very hard job for developers. In the 1980s, programmers had to write different code for every single piece of hardware. This took a lot of time and money. A company called Silicon Graphics, Inc., or SGI, wanted to fix this. They began developing OpenGL in 1991. They released it to the public on June 30, 1992.

SGI turned their own special system into a public standard that anyone could use. This helped many different types of computers speak the same language.

Many different groups have helped manage OpenGL over the years. In 1992, SGI helped start the OpenGL Architecture Review Board. This group helped decide how the tool would grow. Later, in July 2006, the Khronos Group took over managing the standard. This is a non-profit group made of many technology companies. They work together to add new features to the system.

While newer tools like Vulkan were released in 2016, OpenGL is still very important. The latest version, called 4.6, was released in 2017.

OpenGL is very flexible because it works across many platforms and languages. It can work on different operating systems and with different coding languages. For instance, WebGL is a version that lets you see 3D graphics inside a web browser. There are also versions for Android and iOS devices. Even though it is an older tool, it stays useful today. It can run on many different machines using special layers. This helps it stay a standard in the world of computer graphics.
