Vulkan is a special set of rules for computers. We call this an API, which stands for Application Programming Interface.

An API lets software talk to hardware. Vulkan helps make 3D graphics and computing work well. It is used for high-performance things like video games. It also works for interactive media and complex math. This tool is very important for modern digital worlds.

How does Vulkan work to make things fast? It gives developers more direct control over the GPU. The GPU is the part of the computer that draws pictures.

Older tools like OpenGL were harder to control. Vulkan is a "low-level" API. This means it works very close to how the hardware actually functions. It can also use many CPU cores at once. This helps the computer finish tasks much more quickly.

The history of Vulkan began with a big idea. The Khronos Group started a project in July 2014. They held a kickoff meeting at a place called Valve. Before it was named Vulkan, people called it "OpenGL next." It was built using parts of a tool called Mantle. AMD made Mantle and then gave it to Khronos. This gave them a strong base to build upon.

Many different machines can use Vulkan today. It is "cross-platform," which means it works on many systems. It runs on Windows 7, 8, 10, and 11. It also works on Linux and Android devices.

You can find it on the Nintendo Switch and Raspberry Pi. Even the Stadia streaming service used it. Because it works on so many things, it is very useful. It helps developers write code that works almost everywhere.

Vulkan has many different versions that have improved over time. Version 1.0 was released in February 2016. Later, version 1.1 arrived on March 7, 2018. This version added support for using more than one GPU at once.

Version 1.2 came out on January 15, 2020. It added many new features to make it even better. Version 1.3 was released on January 25, 2022. The most recent version, 1.4, arrived on December 3, 2024. Each update makes graphics and computing even more powerful.
