Swift is a special way to talk to computers.

It is called a programming language. People use it to write code for many different apps. Swift is a high-level language, which means it is designed to be easy for humans to read. It is also a compiled language. This means the code is turned into machine code that a computer understands. This process helps the computer run the programs very quickly.

Swift works by following a very careful set of steps. When a person writes code, the Swift toolchain helps turn those words into instructions. One big goal of Swift is to be safe. It helps programmers catch mistakes, which are often called software bugs. For example, Swift manages memory automatically so humans do not have to do it by hand. It also checks for common errors, like trying to use a value that is not there. This makes the whole way it works much more reliable.

This language has a very interesting history. A man named Chris Lattner started working on Swift in July 2010. He worked at Apple Inc. with many other programmers. They wanted to replace an older language called Objective-C. That old language had been around since the early 1980s. Swift was built to be much more modern. In 2017, Chris Lattner left Apple to work for Tesla Motors. After that, a person named Ted Kremenek took over the lead role.

Swift has grown a lot since it first arrived. It was first released in June 2014 at a big meeting called WWDC. At first, it was a private tool for Apple. However, on December 3, 2015, Apple made it open-source. This means the code is free for anyone to see and help improve. Version 2.2 was the first version to use this open-source license. Since then, there have been many updates, like Swift 5 in 2019 and Swift 6 in 2024. It even won awards for being a "most loved" language by developers.

Today, Swift is used in many different places. You can find it on Apple devices like the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It also works on Linux and Windows computers. People can even use it on Android devices. If you want to learn how to use it, there is an app called Swift Playgrounds. It uses a 3D game to teach you how to code. This makes learning a hard job feel like a fun discovery. Swift connects many different types of technology together.
