It is a programming language. This means it helps people write code. People use code to make apps.

Chris Lattner started working on Swift in 2010. He worked with many people at Apple. They wanted a new way to build software. The old way was called Objective-C. Objective-C was very old. Swift is much newer and safer. It helps people find mistakes in their code. This makes building apps easier and faster.

Swift was first released in June 2014. At first, only Apple could use it. But in 2015, Apple made it open-source. This means anyone can help improve it. Now, many people around the world work on it. You can find the code on a site called GitHub.

Swift works on many different tools. It works on iPhones and Macs. It also works on Linux and Windows.
