Visual Basic is a special way to write code for computers. It is a programming language used to build many different types of software. Microsoft created this version, called Visual Basic .NET, in the year 2002. It was made to follow an older version known as Visual Basic 6.0. Today, it is one of three main languages used in the .NET ecosystem. This system helps different programs work together smoothly.

One way people use this language is to make desktop apps for Windows. They often use a tool called Windows Forms to do this. Developers use a program called Visual Studio to design how the app looks. In Visual Studio, you can drag and drop parts onto a window. These parts are called controls, such as buttons or text boxes. Every control has special traits like its color, size, or font. You can also write code for an event handler. This tells the control what to do when someone clicks or drags it.

Writing code requires following very specific rules called syntax. You use statements to tell the computer exactly what actions to take. Some statements are simple, like an expression on a single line. Other statements help the program make decisions or repeat tasks. For example, an "If...Then" statement lets the program choose a path. A "For Each" statement lets the program step through a list of items. You can even use loops, like a "Do...Loop," to repeat a job many times.

Visual Basic has changed quite a bit over the years. In the newer .NET versions, some numbers can be much larger. The Integer type is now 32 bits long instead of 16 bits. The Long type grew from 32 bits to 64 bits. This helps the computer handle much bigger pieces of information. Microsoft also changed how the language handles objects. It now uses the .NET Framework to run its programs. This framework includes a part called the Common Language Runtime.

Learning this language is a bit like building with blocks. You use different modules to act as containers for your code. A module can hold variables, functions, or other parts of a program. You can even write a very simple program to say "Hello, World!" to a user. This is a classic way for beginners to start coding. You can show this message in a command-line window or a small pop-up box. These boxes are called message boxes, and they make interacting with computers feel very natural.
