x86

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Computers need a way to follow instructions to work. This way of working is called an architecture. One of the most famous families is called x86.

It is a complex instruction set architecture, or CISC. This means the chips use a large set of commands to do tasks. Most desktop and laptop computers use these chips today. They are also used in very powerful machines like workstations and servers.

Even many of the fastest supercomputers in the world use x86 chips.

How does this family work? It started with a chip called the 8086. This chip was a 16-bit design. Later, Intel made the 8088, which had an 8-bit external bus. To help the chip talk to more memory, Intel used something called memory segmentation. This allowed the chip to reach more parts of the computer's memory.

Today, x86 often refers to the 32-bit instructions from the 80386 chip. This set of rules is a common standard for many modern operating systems. This helps different software work on many different machines.

The history of x86 began in 1978. That is when Intel introduced the 8086 microprocessor. The name "x86" actually comes from the names of later chips. For example, the 80186, 80286, 80386, and 80486 all end in "86."

In the 1980s, the term usually meant any chip that could work with the 8086. Intel even tried a different naming system called iAPX for a short time. This system included names like iRMX and iSBC, but it did not last long.

Many different companies have made x86 chips over the years. Intel is one of the main makers. Another big company is AMD. AMD made a 64-bit version called x86-64 starting around 2001. This was a huge step for the family. Intel later made a design that worked with it. Other companies like VIA, NEC, and Cyrix also made chips for this family. These companies helped x86 grow into what it is today.

You can see x86 in many parts of your life. Most computers you use at home or school use this architecture. However, you will not find it in everything. Small things like toys or home appliances usually use different chips. These small tools often use ARM or RISC-V chips instead. These other chips are better for things that use tiny batteries. While x86 is not in a toaster, it is the heart of most big computing tasks.
