This family started in 1978. A company named Intel made the first chip. It was called the 8086. Later, they made more chips like the 80286 and 80386. The name x86 comes from these names ending in "86."

Today, x86 chips are in many places. Most desktop and laptop computers use them. They are also used in very big machines. These big machines are called workstations or servers. Some of the fastest supercomputers in the world use them too.

Not all small things use x86. Things like toys or home tools often use different chips. These small tools need to use very little power. They often use chips like ARM instead. But for big jobs, x86 is still a leader. It keeps getting better and faster every year.
