Embedded system

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

An embedded system is a specialized computer. It is not a general computer like a laptop. Instead, it is built into a larger machine to do one job.

These systems combine a processor, memory, and parts for input and output. They are often part of a bigger electronic or mechanical device. Because they control physical parts, they must often work in real-time. This means they must respond to things immediately. Most microprocessors made today are actually used in these systems.

How these systems work depends on their design. Many use a microcontroller, which is a single chip. This chip holds the processor and the memory together. Other systems use a standard microprocessor with extra chips for memory.

Engineers can optimize these systems to be small and cheap. This makes the final product more reliable and better at its job. The instructions for the system are called firmware. This firmware is stored on special memory chips like flash memory. It tells the hardware exactly how to behave.

We can trace the history of these systems to the 1960s. It began with the MOS integrated circuit. This was a chip made from special transistors. By the late 1960s, these chips became much more complex. In 1969, the Four-Phase Systems AL1 became a multi-chip microprocessor. Later, in 1971, the Intel 4004 was released. This was the first single-chip microprocessor. Federico Faggin, Marcian Hoff, Stan Mazor, and Masatoshi Shima helped develop it. It was originally designed for small systems like calculators.

Embedded systems are found in many places today. You might find them in a digital watch or an MP3 player.

They are also in home appliances like washing machines. In cars, they help with safety features like anti-lock brakes. They even help doctors with medical imaging like MRI scans. Some systems are very large, like those in factories or power grids. Others are tiny wireless sensors called motes. These motes can run on a battery for many years. They help people measure things in the physical world.

These systems connect to things you use every day. A microwave oven uses one to control heat and timing. A video game console uses one to run your games. Even your cell phone relies on many embedded systems. Some systems have a screen with a menu. Others use simple buttons or small lights to show information.

You can even talk to some systems through a web browser. This allows a small device to have a big, easy interface. They make our modern world work smoothly and safely.
