Firmware is a special kind of set of instructions for machines. It sits right in the middle between hardware and software. Hardware is the physical part of a device you can touch. Software is the set of programs that people run.

Firmware acts as a bridge between these two things. It provides low-level control for the device's hardware. For simple tools, it might do all the monitoring and data work. For complex machines, it helps the hardware talk to the operating system.

This instruction set works by staying inside the device's memory. It is stored in non-volatile memory, which means it stays there even when the power is off. Some devices use read-only memory, also called ROM. Other devices use programmable memory like EEPROM or flash memory.

To change firmware in a ROM chip, you must physically replace the chip. However, most modern devices use programmable memory instead. People change this memory through a process called flashing. Flashing overwrites the old data with new data to fix bugs or add features.

People first began using the term firmware in 1967. A writer named Ascher Opler used the word in a Datamation article. He saw it as an intermediary between hardware and software. He thought future computers would use a special high-speed memory for these instructions. As computers grew more complex, they needed these programs to run automatically. This helped people who did not have much technical knowledge use them easily.

This led to software that users do not even know is running.

Firmware is found in almost every electronic device around us. You can find it in personal computers and smartphones. It is also inside home appliances like washing machines and microwaves.

Even vehicles use it to run sensors and anti-lock braking systems. Since 1996, most cars have used on-board computers for this. You can even find firmware in small things like USB mice and keyboards. Some companies even use firmware updates to make a camera battery last longer.

Sometimes, people try to change firmware in ways the makers did not intend. This is often called firmware hacking. People might create custom firmware to unlock new features. For example, some people put the game Doom on an iPod.

However, there are also security risks with firmware. Some researchers say that closed firmware can be a risk to privacy. They suggest that firmware should be open-source so people can check the code. This helps make sure the instructions are safe and correct.
