UEFI is a special set of rules for computer firmware. Firmware is the software that lives on a computer's hardware. When you press the power button, UEFI is usually the first thing to run

. It works before your main operating system, like Windows or Linux, can start. This system is stored on a small chip on the motherboard

. It is very important because it helps the computer wake up and find the right path to start your software.

UEFI works through different types of services to help the computer. There are boot services that run only while the computer is starting up

. These services handle things like showing text or pictures on your screen. There are also runtime services that stay active even after the computer is running. These can help the computer keep track of the date and the time. UEFI can also store small bits of data called variables to help the system remember things after a crash.

For a long time, computers used an older system called BIOS. BIOS was a standard created by IBM for its personal computers. However, BIOS had many limits that made it hard to use for large servers. To fix this, Intel started a project in 1998 called the Intel Boot Initiative. This work eventually became the Extensible Firmware Interface, or EFI. In 2008, Intel gave the specification to a group called the UEFI Forum. Now, the UEFI Forum owns the specification and helps keep it updated for everyone.

UEFI has grown a lot through many different versions over the years. Version 2.0 was released on January 31, 2006, and added security features. Version 2.1 came out on January 7, 2007, to add better user interfaces. In 2011, version 2.3.1 added a feature called Secure Boot to help keep systems safe

. The most recent version, 2.11, was published in December 2024. These updates allow UEFI to work with many different types of processors and large storage disks.

One big way UEFI helps is by working with huge storage disks. Older systems used a method called MBR, but that had limits on disk size. UEFI works with a newer system called the GUID Partition Table, or GPT. This new way lets disks be much larger than 2 terabytes

. It also allows for more partitions on a single disk. This is why modern computers can hold so much information. UEFI makes sure the computer can find and use all that space correctly.
