8-bit computing

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Computers use tiny pieces of data called bits to function. An 8-bit system uses groups of eight bits, which is also called an octet. These units are used in the parts of a computer that process information. This includes the central processing unit, or CPU. It also includes the arithmetic logic unit, which handles math.

These 8-bit parts can hold many different values. One 8-bit register can store 256 different values. The exact numbers depend on the system used. One way uses numbers from 0 to 255. Another way uses numbers from -128 to 127.

How these computers work involves many moving parts. An 8-bit CPU uses an 8-bit data bus. This means it can access 8 bits of data at once. Most 8-bit processors use a larger address bus. This bus is usually 16 bits wide. This allows the computer to find a large amount of memory. A 16-bit address space can reach 64 KB of memory. This is equal to 65,536 bytes.

Some systems use special tricks to go even higher. They use something called bank switching to break the 64 KB limit.

These chips changed the history of computing forever. Before 8-bit chips, computers were very large. They were called mainframes or minicomputers. 8-bit microprocessors made computers smaller and more affordable. This shift helped create the first personal computers. The first commercial 8-bit processor was the Intel 8008. It came out in 1972 for a specific terminal. Later, the Intel 8080 became very popular in the late 1970s.

It was used by many hobbyists.

Many famous machines were built using these 8-bit chips. The MOS Technology 6502 arrived in 1975. It was used in the Apple I and Apple II. It also powered the Atari 8-bit computers and the BBC Micro. Many people know it from video game consoles. The Atari 2600 and the Nintendo Entertainment System both used it.

The Zilog Z80 was another very popular chip. It was compatible with the Intel 8080. The Z80 was even used in home computers and game consoles. One famous chip, the Zilog Z80, was discontinued in 2024.

Even though these chips are older, they are still around. Many 8-bit microcontrollers are used in embedded systems today. These are tiny computers inside everyday tools. They are everywhere in our modern world.

Learning about these chips is still a great way to learn. Engineering students often design 8-bit CPUs for practice. They might even build them on a breadboard. Some people even use FPGAs to design them. This helps people understand how all computers work.
