16-bit computing

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A 16-bit microcomputer is a machine that uses a 16-bit microprocessor. This chip acts like the brain of the computer. Inside the chip, there are small storage spots called registers. A 16-bit register can hold many different values. One way to use these bits is for unsigned binary numbers. This allows the register to store any number from 0 to 65,535. Another way is called two's complement. This method lets the computer use negative numbers. With this method, the range is -32,768 to 32,767.

These bits do more than just store numbers. They also help the computer find its memory. A processor with 16-bit memory addresses can reach 64 KiB of memory. KiB is a way to measure how much data a system holds. Some systems use a trick called segmentation to reach even more memory. This uses segment offsets to find more locations. This is like adding extra pages to a book so you can read more.

Computers have changed a lot over the years. The MIT Whirlwind from 1951 might have been the first 16-bit computer. In the 1960s, 16-bit word lengths became much more common. This happened because of a new way to code text called ASCII. ASCII used 7 bits for each character. This led to using 8-bit groups to store them. Early 16-bit computers from 1965 to 1970 included the IBM 1130 and the HP 2100. The Data General Nova and the DEC PDP-11 were also popular.

In the 1970s, engineers began making small 16-bit chips. Some of these used many chips to work together. For example, the National Semiconductor IMP-16 used five chips in 1973. The NEC μCOM-16 used only two chips in 1974. Later, single-chip microprocessors arrived. The Panafacom MN1610 and the National Semiconductor PACE appeared in 1975. The Texas Instruments TMS9900 came out in 1976. Other famous processors include the Intel 8086 and the Zilog Z8000.

Today, most personal computers use much more than 16 bits. However, 16-bit technology is still very useful. It is often used in embedded applications. These are small, specialized computers inside other machines. Some 16-bit microcontrollers are very cheap. You can find them for less than one US dollar in large groups. This makes them great for simple tasks. Even though we have bigger computers now, these small chips still have an important job to do.
