16-bit computing

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Computers use bits to handle information. A 16-bit computer uses a special part called a microprocessor. This part has 16-bit registers. A register is a tiny storage spot for numbers.

One 16-bit register can hold many values. It can hold any number from 0 to 65,535. It can also hold negative numbers. In that case, the range is -32,768 to 32,767. These bits also help the computer find its memory. A 16-bit system can reach 64 KiB of memory. KiB is a way to measure how much data a computer holds.

These computers became more common in the 1960s. Many big machines used them. Some famous ones include the IBM 1130 and the DEC PDP-11. In the 1970s, small 16-bit chips began to appear. One example is the Intel 8086. Today, most personal computers use more bits. But 16-bit chips are still used in small tools. These are called microcontrollers. They are very cheap to make.
