32-bit computing

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Computers use bits to process data. A 32-bit computer uses units of 32 bits. This helps the computer do big math quickly. It also lets the computer handle more data at once.

These systems were very popular in the 1990s. They helped many people use the World Wide Web. A 32-bit computer can use up to 4 GiB of RAM. RAM is the memory a computer uses to work. This was much more than older computers could use.

Some parts of a computer are called registers. These are tiny spots that store numbers. A 32-bit register can hold 2^32 different values. This is a very large number! One way to show these numbers is from 0 to 4,294,967,295. Another way uses negative numbers too.

Today, most computers and phones use 64 bits. This allows them to use even more memory. But 32-bit systems are still used for some tasks. They have been around since the early days of computing. One early model was the Manchester Baby in 1948.
