Windows 9x was a famous family of computer operating systems.

An operating system is the main software that runs a computer. Microsoft made these versions for home desktops between 1995 and 2000. They were very popular with people using computers at home. In 1998, Windows held 82% of the market share for operating systems. This means most people were using Windows on their machines. This family of software changed how we used technology every day.

These systems worked by using a core part called a kernel.

The Windows 9x family used a kernel first seen in Windows 95. To help people use older programs, Microsoft kept support for MS-DOS. MS-DOS was an older way to run a computer. The system would boot into Windows using this older support. This allowed for something called real mode support for DOS. This helped the new software talk to the old software. It made sure people could still use their older tools.

Microsoft worked on these versions for many years.

The very first Windows version came out in 1985. It was called "Interface Manager" before a marketing head suggested "Windows." Later, a person named Dave Cutler helped build a different system called Windows NT. Microsoft also tried to build a huge project called Cairo. Cairo was meant to be a next-generation system for everyone. However, the Cairo project was too difficult and was cancelled. It lasted for five years before Microsoft stopped working on it.

There were several specific versions in this family. Windows 95 was released on August 24, 1995. It had an internal version number of 4.0. Next, Windows 98 arrived on June 25, 1998, with version 4.1. A special version called Windows 98 Second Edition came out in 1999. The final version was Windows Me, released on September 14, 2000. It had the internal version number 4.9. These numbers helped engineers keep track of the different updates. Each version brought new features to the home computer user.

You might recognize some of these ideas today. Windows 98 helped make things like USB connections much better. It also included the Internet Explorer web browser. Windows Me introduced a tool called System Restore. This tool lets you go back to a time when the computer worked well. It also had Windows Movie Maker for making films. Later, Microsoft moved all their systems to the Windows NT codebase. This happened with the release of Windows XP. Now, almost all Windows systems use that same strong foundation.
