Windows NT is a special family of computer software. This software is called an operating system. It helps a computer manage its parts and run programs.

Microsoft first released it on July 27, 1993. It was made for office workstations and large servers. These are powerful computers used by many people at once. Later, Microsoft used this technology for home computers too. This happened with the release of Windows XP in 2001.

This system works using a layered design. It has two main parts called user mode and kernel mode.

Programs in user mode have limited access to the computer. This keeps the system safe from mistakes. The kernel mode is different because it has full access. It can talk to all the hardware and memory. The kernel is a hybrid kernel. It uses a special layer called the Hardware Abstraction Layer, or HAL. This layer helps the software work on different types of computer brains.

Building this system was a big job. Microsoft started planning it in October 1988.

At first, it was called NT OS/2. It was meant to be a project with a company called IBM. However, the two companies had a disagreement. Microsoft decided to work on it alone. They hired a group of experts led by Dave Cutler. These experts brought ideas from their work on older systems like VMS. This helped make Windows NT very strong and stable.

There are many interesting facts about its name and parts. The name "NT" once stood for "New Technology."

Later, Microsoft said the letters did not have a specific meaning. The first version was Windows NT 3.1. It used 32-bit memory addressing to handle more data. This was a huge step up from older 16-bit versions. It also used a secure file system called NTFS. This system helps keep files safe and organized on the disk. Newer versions now use 64-bit computing to be even faster.

Windows NT is like the foundation of a house. Even if you do not see it, it holds everything up.

Most modern Windows computers still use this same technology. For example, Windows Server 2025 was announced in 2024. It is built on the same ideas from decades ago. When you use a computer today, you are using its legacy. It turned from a tool for big offices into a tool for everyone. This technology changed how we use computers every day.
