Microsoft first released it on July 27, 1993. It was made for big office machines and servers. These are computers that run networks.

This system used new technology. It used a 32-bit kernel. A kernel is the main part of an operating system. It helps the computer talk to its parts. This allowed computers to handle much more memory. Older versions of Windows could not do this.

Windows NT was also built to be portable. This means it could work on different types of computer brains. It could work on chips from Intel and MIPS. It could even work on Alpha chips.

Later, Microsoft put this technology into home computers. This happened with Windows XP in 2001. The name "NT" was dropped from newer names. But the technology is still there. It is used in Windows Server 2025. The system uses two main parts. One part is called user mode. The other part is called kernel mode. Kernel mode has full access to the computer's hardware.
