Computers need a way to organize files on a drive. Microsoft made a system for this called NTFS.

It was made in the 1990s. It was built to be better than older systems. One big job is keeping data safe. NTFS uses access control lists, or ACLs. These are lists that say who can read or change a file.

It can also use encryption. This is a way to lock files so only the owner can see them. NTFS uses a tool called journaling. This keeps a log of changes to the system. It helps the computer stay organized. Another feature is called volume shadow copy. This lets the computer make backups while you are still using it. NTFS can also use compression. This makes files take up less space. It can also use sparse files. These files do not save empty space, which saves room.
