HFS Plus

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

HFS Plus is a way for computers to save and organize files. Apple made this system for its computers. It first came out in 1998 with Mac OS 8.1. It was better than the old system called HFS.

HFS Plus can handle much larger files. It can also use much longer names for files. Names can be up to 255 characters long. It uses a system called Unicode to name things. This lets it use many different types of characters.

This system also helps big disks work better. It uses a set of parts called allocation blocks. HFS Plus can use many more of these blocks than HFS. This helps it use up all the space on a large disk.

Apple added a tool called journaling to help keep data safe. This tool helps prevent mistakes when saving files. It was made a standard part of the system in 2002. Later, Apple added ways to hide files with a code. This is called encryption. It helps keep your files private and safe.
