Computers need special software to work. Apple made a famous series called Classic Mac OS.

It began in 1984 with System 1.

Before this, many computers used text commands. You had to type words to make them work. Classic Mac OS changed this. It used a graphical user interface. This is a way to use a computer with pictures. You could use a mouse to click and drag.

Early versions only ran one app at a time. Later, Apple added tools like MultiFinder. This let users see many windows at once. They could even use a clipboard to copy and paste.

Mac files were also special. They used two parts called forks. One part held the main data. The other part held resources like sounds or menus. This helped the computer show icons and styles. Susan Kare designed the famous icons. These small pictures represent folders and apps.

In 2001, Apple replaced this system with Mac OS X. The new system was very different inside. However, it kept many of the same design ideas. This made it easy for people to switch.
