Wine is a special tool for computers. It is a compatibility layer. This means it helps programs made for Windows run on other systems. These systems are often called Unix-like systems. Wine works on Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD.

Wine does not use emulation. Emulation makes a computer pretend to be a different kind of machine. Instead, Wine translates the instructions. It acts like a bridge between the program and the computer. This helps people play Windows games on Linux.

Making Wine is hard work. Developers must use reverse engineering. This is a way to study how a program works without having the original plans. They do this because Microsoft does not share all its secrets. They must copy how Windows behaves very precisely.

Many people help with this project. A company called CodeWeavers is a main sponsor. They pay many developers to work on Wine. Other companies like Google have also helped.

There are also extra tools to help users. One tool is called PlayOnLinux. It makes it easier to install games. Another tool is Winetricks. It helps set up parts that programs need to run.
