An operating system is the main software that runs a computer. Apple Inc. created two major series of these systems for Macintosh computers.

The first series is called the classic Mac OS. It began in 1984 with the original Macintosh System Software. This system was known for being easy for people to use. However, it had some hard jobs to do. It struggled with memory management and lacked some modern tools. This meant it could not always handle many tasks perfectly.

To fix these problems, Apple built a new way for the system to work. They bought a company called NeXT to help them.

This led to a new system based on NeXTSTEP, which is a Unix system. This new design solved many technical problems from the old version. It used a better way to manage memory and handle tasks. The first version of this new system arrived in 2001. It was originally called Mac OS X before being renamed macOS.

Apple worked on many different ideas before they found the right one. They tried several projects to connect different types of computers. Some of these were named A/UX, MAE, and MkLinux. They also had some projects that did not finish. These secret projects had names like Star Trek, Taligent, and Copland. Copland was meant to update the classic system. But Apple decided to buy NeXT instead to find a better path forward.

There are many important dates in the history of Mac software. The first Macintosh was released on January 24, 1984. The new Mac OS X system first launched on March 24, 2001. Its first version was codenamed "Cheetah." Later versions had names like "Puma" and "Jaguar." Since 2011, Apple has given users one major update every year. The newest version, macOS Sequoia, arrived in September 2024. Each year, the software gets better and newer features.

Even though the systems changed, they still look very similar. They both use a GUI, which is a graphical user interface. This means you use pictures to talk to the computer. You will see a menu bar at the top of the screen. You will also see the Finder, which uses a desktop metaphor. This uses icons to represent files and apps. For example, a folder holds files just like a real folder. A trash can icon is used to delete things.
