Australorp

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Australorp is a special kind of chicken from Australia. It is a dual-purpose breed. This means it is useful for both meat and eggs.

These birds are very popular around the whole world. They are known for being great at laying eggs. They are also good at being mothers. They sit well on nests to help their chicks.

To make this breed, farmers used a careful way of breeding. They started with birds called Black Orpingtons from England. Between 1890 and the early 1900s, these birds came to Australia.

Breeders mixed them with other types like the White Leghorn and Minorca. They even used some Rhode Island Red and Plymouth Rock blood. This helped make the chickens better at their jobs. The name Australorp means "Australian chicken."

Many people helped name and grow this breed. Before the First World War, William Wallace Scott used the name. In 1919, Arthur Harwood suggested the name "Australs." He thought adding "orp" at the end was a good idea. Later, W. Powell-Owen wrote the British Standard for them in 1921. The American Poultry Association added them to their list in 1929.

Australorps are famous for breaking many egg records. In 1922 and 1923, six hens set a huge record. They laid 1,857 eggs in one year. That was about 310 eggs for each hen.

One hen even laid 364 eggs in 365 days! Most hens lay about 190 light brown eggs every year. Bantam hens lay about 160 eggs each year.

These chickens come in many different colors. In the United States, only black birds are recognized. Australia recognizes black, white, and blue colors.

South Africa recognizes even more, like golden and buff. Australorps live on all five inhabited continents. They are found in seventeen different countries. In 2024, there were nearly 2,000,000 birds in the world.
