These birds have a very interesting way of living together. They are social animals that live in groups called flocks. Inside a flock, birds follow a pecking order. This means some birds are more dominant than others. The dominant birds get first choice of food and nesting spots.

They also use different sounds to talk to each other. A rooster makes a loud crowing sound to mark his territory. Hens cluck loudly to call their chicks or after laying an egg.

Scientists believe chickens came from a wild bird called the red junglefowl. This wild bird is native to Southeast Asia. People likely began domesticating them about 8,000 years ago.

Some researchers think chickens were attracted to rice growing in Thailand. They might have nested near the rice and became tame. This happened around the same time people were growing rice.

Over time, these birds spread to China, India, and many other places.

Chickens have many different names depending on their age and sex. An adult female is called a hen. An adult male is often called a rooster or a cock. A young female is called a pullet. A young male is called a cockerel.

Baby chickens are called chicks. There are also special breeds like broilers for meat. Some hens are amazing layers that can make 300 eggs in one year.

Watching a chicken grow is a busy process. A hen will sit on her eggs to keep them warm. This is called going broody. After about 21 days, the eggs will hatch. The tiny chick uses a special egg tooth to break the shell.

The hen stays with them to keep them warm and safe. She leads the chicks to find food and water. The chicks follow her closely because they imprint on her. This helps the young birds learn how to survive.
