Domestic duck

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Domestic ducks are birds raised by people for many reasons. Most varieties come from the mallard, which is a wild duck. Some ducks also come from the Muscovy duck. People raise them mainly for meat and eggs. Other ducks are kept for their beautiful feathers or special crests. These special birds are used in competitions called exhibitions.

Farming these birds is a very helpful way to use land. In East and Southeast Asia, farmers use rice-duck farming. This is a way of growing two things at once. The ducks live in the rice paddies. They eat small pests that might hurt the rice crop. The ducks also leave manure, which is waste that helps the rice grow.

Humans have been working with ducks for a very long time. Scientists believe mallards were first domesticated in China around 200 BC. Some written records from central China date to about 500 BC. In ancient times, people in Egypt hunted wild ducks. However, they did not raise them on farms like we do now. The Muscovy duck was domesticated in a different place, in Mexico and South America.

Ducks are very busy and productive animals. Most breeds can lay about 200 eggs every year. A special breed called the Indian Runner can lay over 300 eggs. In 2021, about 4.3 billion ducks were raised for meat worldwide. Most of this happened in China, which produced over 80% of the world's duck meat.

You might recognize ducks from many famous stories and songs. Beatrix Potter wrote about a duck named Jemima Puddle-Duck in 1908. The Disney character Donald Duck is based on the White Pekin breed. In the musical piece Peter and the Wolf, a composer named Sergei Prokofiev used an oboe to represent a duck. Even in ancient Egypt, ducks were used in art as symbols.
