You can find these birds on almost every continent. The only place they do not live is Antarctica. There are about 174 different species in this family.

These birds are built to live near or on the water. They are great at swimming and floating on the surface. Some species can even dive deep into shallow water. They play an important role in nature and for people too.

These birds have special bodies that help them live in wet places. Their feathers have special oils to keep them from getting soaked.

Most have webbed feet to push through the water. Their legs are short and strong. These legs sit far back on their bodies. This helps them swim well, but it can make walking on land look a bit awkward.

Their bills are often flat and soft. Some birds, like mergansers, have serrated bills to catch fish. Most adults eat plants, but young birds might eat small water bugs.

Scientists have studied these birds for a very long time. An English zoologist named William Elford Leach gave them the name Anatidae in 1819.

He was the Keeper of Zoology at the British Museum. Today, experts still study how these birds are related. Some researchers use DNA to look at their history. This helps them understand which birds are close cousins. The family is very old and has been around since the time of the dinosaurs.

Anatidae species come in many different sizes. The cotton pygmy goose is tiny and weighs only 164 grams.

On the other hand, the trumpeter swan is huge. It can weigh as much as 17.2 kg.

A long time ago, an extinct bird called Garganornis ballmanni was even bigger. It weighed about 22 kg. Since the year 1600, five species have become extinct. Many other birds in this family are currently threatened with extinction.

Humans and these water birds have a very long history together. People often use duck and goose feathers to make warm pillows and coats.

We also use many of these birds for food. However, humans have also caused problems for them. Hunting and losing their homes can make their numbers drop. Some birds even lost the ability to fly because they lived on islands without predators. Today, many groups work hard to protect these birds and their homes.
