Most ducks live in the water. They can be found in fresh water or in the salty sea. Some people mistake them for other birds like grebes or coots. These birds look similar but are not actually related to ducks. Ducks are very important parts of the world's water systems.

Ducks have many ways to find their food. Dabbling ducks feed at the surface of the water. They often tip their bodies head-first into the water to reach plants.

Diving ducks and sea ducks go much deeper underwater. These diving ducks are often heavier than the dabbling kind. This extra weight makes it harder for them to fly. They use their strong legs to swim and hunt for fish. Some ducks even eat small frogs or worms from the mud.

Many ducks have a special tool in their bills. It is a comb-like structure called a pecten. This pecten helps them strain food from the water. It also helps them hold onto slippery food. Ducks use the pecten to clean their feathers too. This is called preening.

Keeping feathers clean is very important for staying healthy.

Humans have lived alongside ducks for a very long time. People have hunted them since prehistoric times. In California, bones show ducks lived there 7,800 to 6,400 years ago. Hunters in places like Egypt and China also used ducks for food. Some people in New Zealand hunted the Finsch's duck. This bird could not fly and may have become extinct. This shows how humans and nature have always been connected.

Ducks can be found on almost every continent. They live everywhere except for Antarctica. Some ducks live on far-away islands like the Galápagos.

Many species are migratory. This means they fly to new places every year. Other ducks are nomadic and move when it rains. A male duck is called a drake. A female is called a hen.
