Magpie goose

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The magpie goose is a very special waterbird. It is the only living member of its own family, called Anseranatidae.

You can find these birds in northern Australia and southern New Guinea. They live in open wetlands like swamps and floodplains. These birds are quite large and easy to spot. They grow to about 75 to 90 centimeters long. They usually weigh around 3 kilograms.

Their feathers are black and white, and they have bright yellowish legs.

These birds have a very interesting way of living and eating. They use a long, hooked bill to eat plants. They enjoy eating dry grass, seeds, and wild rice. They can find food in the water or on land. Their feet are only partially webbed, which helps them move in both places. Magpie geese are also very social creatures. They live in large, noisy flocks that can have a few thousand birds.

They often nest on the ground or in trees. Some of these nests are five meters high above the ground.

Scientists call the magpie goose a "living fossil." This is because its family is incredibly old. The magpie goose family likely split away from other birds before the big extinction event 66 million years ago.

We know this from studying fossils. Some fossils of related birds were found in New Jersey and England. In Australia, fossils of a bird called Eoanseranas were found in Queensland. These old bones show that this group of birds was once spread across the whole world. They may have been a very dominant group of waterbirds a long time ago.

History shows that these birds used to live in many more places. They once lived in southern Australia, including Victoria and South Australia. However, they disappeared from those areas in the mid-20th century. This happened because of overhunting and the loss of their wetland homes. People drained the wetlands where the birds used to breed. Now, there are projects to bring them back to places like Bool Lagoon.

In northern Australia, they are protected and managed. This helps keep their numbers stable and safe.

Magpie geese are very important to many different people. For Aboriginal people, they have been a seasonal food source for a long time. The Kunwinjku people call the bird "manimunak." You can even see them in ancient rock art.

They are also a popular attraction for tourists. Today, scientists watch them closely because of climate change. Rising sea levels might flood the freshwater areas where they live. This could make life harder for the magpie goose in the future.
