It belongs to the Anser genus. This goose is the longest in its group. It is also the second-heaviest member of its genus. The name comes from Latin and Greek words. These words mean the bird looks like a swan.

This bird is important because it has many different lives. Some live in the wild. Others live on farms as domestic birds. These farm birds are often called Chinese geese.

Wild geese follow a busy seasonal path.

They live in Mongolia and Northeast China. They also live in the Russian Far East. These birds move to different places each year. This way of moving is called migration. In the winter, they fly to central and eastern China. They stay near freshwater to find food. They eat grasses and water plants. They graze on plains and stubble fields too.

A scientist named Carl Linnaeus first described them in 1758. He wrote about them in his book, Systema Naturae. Later, Mathurin Jacques Brisson described the genus Anser in 1760. Even Charles Darwin studied these birds. He looked at how domestic geese were related to wild ones. He saw that they could breed together. This helped him understand how living things change over time.

There are many specific facts about their bodies.

The males are larger than the females. They have longer necks and longer bills. The bill is completely black. This is different from most of their relatives. Most other geese in this group do not have black bills. Their legs and feet are orange. Their eyes are a dark maroon color. The wingspan of an adult goose is quite wide. They have greyish-brown feathers on their backs.

Scientists use a list called the IUCN Red List. This list tracks animals that might disappear. The swan goose is currently listed as Vulnerable. This means their numbers have gone down. They lose their homes and face too much hunting. In 2023, there were between 36,000 and 43,500 birds. Many of them live near the Yangtze River in China. About 60,000 birds might visit those wetlands each year.
